We’ve curated a mix of old and new wardrobe essentials ideal for a sunny spring break escape. When it comes to vacation fashion, we always aim for a balance of comfort, style, and authenticity. It’s crucial to peek into your wardrobe and rediscover hidden treasures, but everyone wants a little newness, too. Instead of embarking on a shopping spree that often leads to returns, consider renting your vacation outfits for a hassle-free experience.
Ahead, discover what’s on our spring break rental list.
Staud’s Silvia top stands out as the centerpiece of your ensemble. Crafted from ecru cotton tweed and lined with voile, it features a strapless neckline with internal gumming and drapes elegantly to a frayed, slightly extended hem. Destined to be the ultimate “it girl” look, this top is perfect for soaking up the endless sunshine in Laguna, where leisurely brunches and beach strolls are the only things on the agenda.
Spring break wouldn’t be complete without a raffia handbag. Saint Laurent’s “Kaia” satchel bag, crafted from raffia-like nylon with a leather adjustable shoulder strap, embodies the essence of luxurious Italian craftsmanship. It’s bound to make a statement on the beach and, fortunately, it’s conveniently packable in your suitcase.
A blazer may not be the first thing that comes to mind for a beach outfit, but Cult Gaia’s Carlotta Semi-Sheer Blazer in cream-white with knitted and crochet details is ideal for a family photo or a special dinner night. Just throw on your trusty Cult Gaia pearl clutch and platform sandals to complete the look!
Loewe showcases exceptional expertise in draping. Featuring a one-shoulder neckline with a logo-embellished, gold-tone chain at the back, this dress flows elegantly to a sweeping waterfall hem. Pair it with stiletto heels and matching jewelry, and remember that you can also rent one of Loewe’s puzzle bags to complete the look.
A printed Johanna Ortiz dress is our ultimate spring break go-to! This dreamy maxi dress features flirty cutout waist accents and a twirl-worthy ruffled skirt, making it a top pick for your vacation dinner soirées.
Still bringing the ease of a matching set but with an elevated twist is the Agua by Agua Bendita Bergamota Marina Floral set. This ensemble features a painterly floral print and a flowing flared skirt, ideal for warm, sunny days. Complete the look with stylish strappy kitten heels and your favorite ornate clutch.

]]>Natasha López is one of the staff writers and social media manager for Sustainable Baddie. Her work as a journalist has also been featured in Refinery29 and Edible NJ. She stands out as a leader among fashion influencers, showcasing a distinctive and team-approved “susty” style, representing the epitome of top-tier sustainability. Some of her recent stories have highlighted sustainable Black-owned businesses, Fashion Week’s “lived in” outfits, and how to recreate Fashion Week runway looks with a conscious mind.
López established a connection with Tulerie, discovering shared values with Sustainable Baddie in leveraging community and education as drivers for sustainability. Amid ongoing Fashion Month and growing concerns about the industry’s impact, I chatted with López to discuss her goals as a fashion journalist and activist, the Tulerie and Sustainable Baddie collaboration, and why education on sustainability is essential.
Q: What does embodying sustainable style entail in your lifestyle, and how does Sustainable Baddie help you achieve that?
A: Something at the core of Sustainable Baddie is about trying to find the silver lining in the climate crisis and the state of the fast fashion industry. We pride ourselves on being about imperfect, sustainable living. Nobody's perfect. It’s not always about trying to sway people a certain way but just opening the conversation.
Q: What memorable experience reinforced your dedication to a sustainable lifestyle?
A: I don't have one specific moment that stands out, but rather, it’s the everyday occurrences that reinforce my commitment to sustainable living. For example, during my walks home from work, I walk up a hill with steps bordered by greenery, a rare sight in my city. However, amidst the beauty, I always notice an abundance of litter strewn about. The less traveled steps attract trash, from beer cans to plastic bottles and discarded clothing. It’s disheartening to witness such disregard for our environment and communities. These moments serve as reminders of the importance of living sustainably. They compel me to choose a lifestyle that respects the earth and its inhabitants and fosters love and care for the planet and its people.
Q: Do you believe in a capsule wardrobe, and how has it influenced your approach to sustainable fashion?
A: While I don’t label my wardrobe as a capsule wardrobe per se, I value the sustainable principles that underpin it. For me, the key lies in cultivating a collection of versatile pieces. Before introducing anything new to my closet, I make sure that I can envision countless ways to style it with items I already own. This approach promotes creativity and resourcefulness and encourages mindful consumption by prioritizing pieces that integrate with my existing wardrobe.
Q: Are there specific messages or strategies you find most effective in inspiring your followers to adopt sustainable fashion practices?
A: One of my go-to strategies for inspiring our audience to embrace sustainable fashion practices involves spotlighting other sustainable baddies committed to sustainability and creativity in their fashion choices. By showcasing these baddies, we can prove that fashion can be fun and expressive without supporting fast fashion. Sustainable Baddie, like Tulerie, really values the community aspect of sharing and relying on each other to help bring our style visions to life. That’s why we love to feature brands actively adopting sustainable practices, repost baddies who proudly re-wear their clothes through #ReWearThat, and support organizations like Tulerie that promote circular fashion while fostering a sense of community.
Q: What is the most challenging aspect of promoting sustainability today, and how do you overcome it?
A: It narrows down to the fact that we now seek comfort and community through consumption instead of communication and sharing. Social media can easily give someone a false feeling of community when you’re just being influenced to buy things you don’t need so you can feel like a part of something. I’ve tried to consciously curate my feeds (by following or interacting with people who are also sustainable baddies) so that I’m inspired not by what people have and what I don’t but by their ideas and hopes for a more sustainable fashion industry.
Q: How can collaborations between influencers and brands like Tulerie contribute to a more sustainable fashion industry?
A: Collaborations between influencers and brands like Tulerie shed light on a lesser-known aspect of the fashion influencer world: the prevalence of borrowed or loaned clothing! By making this practice more transparent and normalizing the concept of lending pieces, these collaborations can help reduce the pressure to constantly purchase items solely because they are seen by someone else.
Q: Regarding fashion month, what are your thoughts on sustainability and the luxury industry?
A: Inherently, they are meant to be a more sustainable industry. It’s made to order, handmade, or produced at a much smaller scale than other brands. However, transparency is the answer. Ganni, for example, is transparent. They stepped down to open the space for smaller designers this past Copenhagen Fashion Week. That’s amazing, and I’d love to see other large brands take notes and look at what Ganni is doing. There are two sides to the coin for Fashion Weeks—one being frivolous and sometimes far removed from sustainability. But with Sustainable Baddie, I’ve seen a side of fashion week that aligns more with our ethos and mission. That’s spectacular when those brands use the platform to promote sustainability, recycling, upcycling, and even vintage fashion.
-As always, elevate your wardrobe with respected fashion and embrace the shift in style.
]]>“By normalizing the concept of borrowing pieces, we can help to reduce the pressure to constantly purchase items solely because they are seen on someone else,” she says. We challenged López to put her practice into play and style pieces on Tulerie. Her styling process reminded her of the Gary Marshall film Princess Diaries. “I like the duality when she’s wearing a gown, but she has her sunglasses and headphones on. I feel like that was very much the vibe for my looks,” she says.
Ready to steal her style secrets? López’s top rental picks are all about layering, vibrant prints, and funky shapes that scream individuality. Let’s dive in!
For López, layering is key. The Miu Miu jersey top, showcased on the Spring/Summer 2023 runway, features a close-fitting design and smooth texture, perfect for layering. This wraps utility and femininity into one– a signature amongst the Sustainable Baddies. Wear it over a tank dress to emulate Miu Miu’s styling.
Garment-Dyed Ribbed Jersey Top (starting at $244)
Simone Rocha’s taste for ruffles and whimsical proportions is a standout in López’s closet. Exploring the popular theme of girlhood in fashion, Rocha’s modern melancholic and coquettish style truly embodies the essence of girlhood. Style it with a long skirt and ballet flats. Have fun experimenting with colors, or like López, opt for a classic black look.
Junya Watanabe, a protege of Comme des Garçons, is renowned for his avant-garde approach and innovative use of fabrics and drapery. This biker dress embodies techno-couture aesthetics by experimenting with textures and silhouettes, resulting in a contemporary yet feminine appearance.
López adores this additional layering piece for its upcycled and sustainable designs. Despite the striking print, she highlights that it is a versatile top to base an outfit on. By focusing on body-conscious styling, this wearable piece effortlessly hugs the body like a second skin and elevates the laid-back t-shirt classic.
Rabanne demonstrates its appreciation for vibrant artistry through this cotton T-shirt, featuring the renowned “Meditative Rose” painting by Spanish surrealist artist Salvador Dali. The long-sleeve top features a slim-fit silhouette and a high neckline. Style it with a pencil midi skirt and pointed heels for a chic and polished look.
For experienced skiers or those aspiring to blend in on the slopes, the Goldbergh Swarovski crystal ski jacket and pants in a pastel green are the must-rent items for a heightened sense of alpine couture. The billowy exterior and stylish quilting ensures warmth without bulkiness. Additionally, a detachable hood offers flexibility in both coverage and style.
The Alessandra Rich coat crafted from wool-blend bouclé in a bold check pattern might not scream winter at first glance, but with Lopez's styling, you’ll be singing in a different tune. Her secret recipe? Pair it with sassy cherry red tights and boots to ride the color wave and add a touch of classy monochromatic chic.

Since its debut in 1957, the two-tone slingback pumps have become a timeless wardrobe staple. Now, decades later, they're still a must-have in any closet - including Jess’s! Her beige and black pair, featuring a cute gold Chanel logo on the heel, are the stars of her wardrobe. And the best part? After its runway debut, this bag has become a favorite among the trendiest influencers and culture-makers. This remastered version is even more playful and puffy, paying homage to all things exaggerated and entertaining.
Jess’s Valentino Pumps have seen it all, from street-style looks to Netflix red carpet premieres. With their slick black patent leather, they're the perfect shoe for any occasion, and that dainty logo strap adds a touch of class that's just plain heavenly!

]]>The concept of sharing is nothing new. It’s no different than renting out a room on Airbnb – “You let someone use it, enjoy it, and then have it back to yourself,” says Jess. Why say goodbye to your wardrobe when you can make it work for you? That’s the beauty of peer-to-peer lending, the modern and eco-friendly closet-sharing solution.
Tulerie offers Jess the opportunity to earn money from her closet without having to part from it. She can purchase items with the intention of listing them, expanding the cost per wear of her wardrobe, and justifying the price. “I call it handbag math. My rentals fund my future luxury purchases,” says Jess. She has proven this is a lucrative side hustle, making over $6000 in her first year of renting out her wardrobe.
The way it works: Lenders join via an interview call and create profiles where they can list their new and gently used designer clothing, bags, shoes, and accessories in minutes straight from their closet into the app. Tulerie does not hold any inventory and does not sell any products first-hand. Instead, we create a community of lenders and borrowers and facilitate transactions between closets.
“With the closed platform on Tulerie, I trust the borrowers,” says Jess. Everyone is incredibly respectful because each new member is vetted via an interview so our lenders can feel confident sharing their favorite pieces. Jess has had her fair share of items featured in magazines and borrowed by celebrities, and her shoes even walked the red carpet at a Netflix movie premiere because of lending on Tulerie. “There are a bunch of positive experiences with renters,” says Jess.
One of her most cherished memories is when a borrower shared that she was proposed to while wearing Jess’s handbag – a testament to the personal connection she creates with her renters. Another renter wore her vintage Chanel handbag at her courthouse wedding. “I feel like I am there for those celebrations, and it feels great to make someone feel beautiful or confident,” she says. Her commitment to connecting with our style-minded individuals and making their experience memorable with her items doesn’t go unnoticed.
If you have yet to try running a side hustle from home like Jess, now is the time. Here are her top tips on how to get started and be successful.
Beyond the monetary successes, Tulerie is ultimately excited to change how you think about your closet and deliver that desire for newness and variety in your wardrobe in a modern, eco-friendly way without sacrificing the joy of discovery that fashion serves.

]]>According to Federico Marchetti, founder of Yoox Net-a-porter and chair of the Fashion Task Force under King Charles III’s Sustainable Market Initiative, addressing the fashion industry's environmental impact is more crucial than ever. “We are an industry responsible for anywhere from 4 to 8 percent of the emissions in the world, depending on what study you are quoting. We are polluting more than planes are. This is not an opportunity to use for marketing. It’s a question of survival.”
The conversations took place in Dubai from Nov. 30 to Dec. 13, 2023. Some influential fashion leaders leading the conversations included Stella McCartney, Ellen MacArthur, and organizations like Fashion Revolution and Global Fashion Agenda.
Although the summit's outcome suggested that progress will be slow and insufficient in tackling climate change, the fashion industry has taken a proactive approach to highlight real-time solutions. By promoting rental and resale options, the industry encourages consumers to embrace a "newness" without contributing to the overconsumption problem. In addition, durable products, innovative materials, and taking responsibility for the lifecycle of a product are also being prioritized by brands to combat climate change.
We walked away from COP28 with a list of key takeaways regarding sustainable fashion solutions, and we recommend reading Harper’s Bazaar and WWD to learn more. As a company supporting a circular model within the luxury industry, here’s what stuck out to us about the future of fashion and its impact.
STOP RELYING ON FOSSIL FUELS
Over 50 percent of our clothing is made from polyester derived from oil. Unfortunately, the fashion industry has become overly reliant on fossil fuels to manufacture clothes. To address this dependence, the Fossil Fuel Fashion campaign aims to raise awareness of available alternatives and promote sustainable production practices. This is a vital step in mitigating the impact of climate change and improving the material composition of our clothing.
SUPPORT BIODIVERSITY
Material science brand Pangaia and the Trillion Bees coalition are leading a new campaign called “Bee The Change,” which aims to raise awareness about the relationship between clothing, biodiversity, and pollinators. By highlighting the direct impact of fashion on pollinators, such as habitat loss, pesticides, and climate change, the campaign hopes to protect these vital species. With the fashion industry increasingly embracing nature-inspired collections, seeing more global brands joining the cause is encouraging.
SMARTER DESIGNS AND CIRCULAR MODELS
Stella McCartney, known for its innovative approach to materials, unveiled its new Sustainable Market at COP28. The market features groundbreaking materials such as grape-based leather and tree-cellulose sequins. As more brands adopt these new-gen alternatives to traditional materials, customers can expect to see even more exciting innovations in the future.
EMBRACE THE SUSTAINABLE CULTURE
Sustainability is more than just a fleeting trend but a way of life that promotes genuine connections and fosters diverse perspectives. Sam Pattison's cultural sustainability organization, Black Pearl, recently hosted discussions at the COP28 Entertainment + Culture pavilion, featuring activists, the African Biodiversity Network, and Ellie Goulding. These discussions showcased the power of fashion, music, and culture in connecting with audiences worldwide on climate change through personalized storytelling, relatable impact, and inspiring voices from the Global South.
WE ARE A PART OF THE CHANGE
Focusing on building a community and encouraging citizen engagement is more important than ever. Customers should be able to see their values and beliefs reflected in the brands and businesses they support. It's essential to prioritize community involvement and create opportunities for customers to become active members.
As the year comes to a close, we want to express our gratitude to our community of borrowers and lenders who have supported us in our mission to make a difference. We eagerly anticipate 2024 and are excited to witness the growth and prosperity of the takeaways from COP28 in the fashion industry's change-making communities.

]]>A year ago, Vestiaire Collective – a Paris-based luxury global resale site for pre-loved items – made a bold move by removing all fast fashion brands from their platform. Now, they're taking it a step further by banning several other brands that meet their criteria for fast fashion. The company has formed a committee of fashion industry experts who are responsible for making crucial decisions and ensuring that they remain ahead of the curve.
Experts have established several criteria that define a fast fashion brand. These include a low price point, a high renewal rate based on the estimated number of new items dropped yearly, a wide range of products available at any given time, and quick turnaround times from design to market. Additionally, frequent and intense sales promotions are a key feature of this type of brand.
This results in 30 brands being banned from their site for a true fast fashion purge. Business of Fashion says “over 100,000 items have been removed from the platform” to implement the new policy, impacting more than 30,000 active sellers. While some have raised concerns that this new model may affect Vestiaire Collective's profitability, the company's Chief Impact Officer, Dounia Wone, says the real goal is to stay true to the company's values. “The purpose is not to say how much money we can take out of it; the purpose is to say, if we don’t believe in this model and if we continue to sell it, we are not true to our values,” she says.
As a brand that advocates buying less and raising awareness of the impact of overconsumption and overproduction, Vestarie Collective has gained worldwide recognition and influence. By promoting these conversations and actions, the brand encourages people to embrace a more sustainable lifestyle and puts pressure on retailers to do better.
But to be frank, there are small resale businesses and rental platforms like Tulerie that have never allowed fast fashion on their sites. At Tulerie, we’ve always been committed to fostering a community built on luxury and quality pieces, and we will never allow fast fashion to be rented. When you become a member of Tulerie, you know that our focus is on quality over quantity, and we encourage a culture of borrowing and buying less.
We appreciate the efforts made by Vestiaire Collective in prioritizing sustainability in an industry that is heavily focused on consumerism. However, it's important to note that small sustainable businesses and luxury-based rental platforms have been pushing for this conversation long before it became a trending topic.
As we approach the peak of holiday shopping and fast fashion brands tempt us with their speedy shipping and low prices, it's more crucial than ever to reflect on our shopping habits. Vestiaire Collective’s “Think First, Buy Second” message resonates with us. The season of shopping doesn't mean everything must be bought new. Sometimes, the most powerful statement we can make is to choose not to buy.

]]>Wynne Pickus, Amazon’s worldwide sustainability program manager and avid Tulerie renter, is the mastermind behind this collaboration. Although fashion and sustainability’s intersection is not one of the many hats Pickus wears at Amazon, it is a strong personal moral she felt she had to leverage her platform to highlight. “It's super powerful to show that we have our hands in every pot at Amazon,” says Pickus. “This partnership with Tulerie was a turning point to realize that just because this isn't my job doesn't mean I can’t make other sustainable initiatives and partnerships happen. Partnerships are a huge part of sustainability and catalyst to solving the issue.”
Pickus spent the last few months at Amazon planning their second Climate Pledge Summit. The Climate Pledge community of over 450 signatories who have signed onto Amazon’s commitment to be net zero carbon by 2040 were in attendance. Recognizing that many climate leaders would already be in New York that week, Amazon decided to tack on a big event at the end of Climate Week to bring organizations together to strategize solutions.
Kara Hartnett Hurst, vice president of worldwide sustainability, and government officials, including Washington state Governor Jay Inslee and U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry, took center stage to discuss the need for collaborative public-private action.
Amazon holds immense power in the e-commerce and technology industries, making it a dominant force with far-reaching influence in the business world. Amazon is often the blueprint for smaller corporations to follow regarding climate initiatives. “We have a commitment to net zero by 2040. That is 10 years ahead of the Paris agreement,” says Pickus. “We are the decision-makers, and we will be the ones who decide the stride that companies take and the pace that we're growing at.”
Although this status can create pressure as an Amazon leader, Pickus is fueled by the challenge and reassurance that she is making an impact. She has always been interested in how corporations impact the world and felt she needed to go the corporate route to make a real change. “Amazon’s sustainability strategy and goals are aligned with my own values,” she says.
One of their most significant announcements at the event includes Amazon’s new partnership with C40 Cities to launch Laneshift, an initiative aimed at electrifying medium– and heavy-duty shipping, starting in India and Latin America. Later this year, Amazon will continue to show up and be a leader at COP28 and other smaller team conferences to expand these collaborations globally.
Hurst and Sally Fouts, director of The Climate Pledge, were the Amazon employees to be styled by Tulerie founder and CEO Violet Gross and director of community Diana Giese for the Climate Pledge Summit. Hurst was seen in the La DoubleJ long-sleeved Swing Dress, and Fouts wore a Zimmermann dress, Christian Dior pumps, and a Celine bag. Pickus says she leverages Tulerie as much as possible and loved merging the two worlds of Amazon and clothing rental.
Pickus has personal standards and an interest in sustainable fashion. She even has a TikTok page, sustainablewynne, where she shares tips and tricks on sustainable and secondhand shopping. “Fashion is something I’ve been intrigued by my entire life,” she says. “I love my capsule wardrobe, but I also love to bring in fun pieces– Tulerie’s a great way to do it. It's financially smart and sustainable, making it worth it.”
Tulerie is thankful to have had the opportunity to break the stigma of peer-to-peer lending at Climate Week and promote our values of a more circular economy. Pickus and the Amazon team are shaping future conversations about sustainability and progressing the movement.
Pickus says sustainability is built on community, and she looks forward to continuing the partnership with Tulerie and making the most of our established community of changemakers. “It’s more than a partnership we’ve built,” Pickus says. “It’s a friendship between Amazon and Tulerie where we continue to support each other.”

]]>Sustainable ingredient sourcing, environmentally friendly manufacturing processes, and implementing responsible packaging choices are just a few of their impressive commitments. The Davines Group is the first in the industry to create a product with high-quality performance paired perfectly with its sustainable formulation. With their product distribution in 90 countries worldwide, their ‘made in Italy’ perspective on beauty has had a global reach, instilling a timeless culture and standard where people, the planet, and a community are the intersection of sustainability and self-care.
A more notable commitment backed by a standout partnership is the Davines Group's plastic-free promise. The beauty industry, plastic-free? It sounds hard to achieve until the partnership between the Davines Group and Plastic Bank started in 2021 with their “Rethinking Plastic” campaign and has shown continued commitment throughout 2023.
Plastic Bank is a global social enterprise dedicated to reducing plastic pollution while alleviating poverty. They have recently unveiled plans to enhance their collaboration, focusing on retrieving and eliminating ocean-bound plastic debris from vulnerable coastal areas in Indonesia, the Philippines, and Brazil.
The Davines Group and Plastic Bank are tackling the hottest industry topic: circularity. Abandoning the linear process isn’t easy. However, thanks to their partnership, all Davines Group products are Net-Zero Plastic, “achieving a 1:1 balance between plastic used and plastic removed from the environment.”
WWD highlighted that Plastic Bank’s local branches exchange plastic waste as currency as if it couldn't get even circular. With the money, they provide access to food supplies, fuel for cooking, education, healthcare, and digital connectivity to families in need. The initiative has positively impacted 3,202 people and their families between 2020 and 2023.
“We realized that recycling must be human-powered. Impact contributions and the purchase of recycled materials alone cannot solve the plastic pollution crisis,” says David Katz, founder and CEO of Plastic Bank. “Humanity needs a perpetual and persistent behavioral change, which brings the mindfulness of recycling in what we purchase, how we use it, and how we dispose of it.”
With circularity as one of the three Davines Group strategic spheres, it doesn’t stop at the partnership with Plastic Bank. They recognize that a circular economy starts with the packaging. A “Charter for Packaging Research” was written in 2011 to outline more sustainable packaging for the company through the principles of ecodesign.
Within ecodesign lies the mentality that less is more, which is precisely what The Davines Group is doing with their packaging. They are creating lighter packaging, which means less materials and overall lower consumption of natural resources.
How often have you picked up a product in the store because the packaging will look cute on your bathroom sink? Although their packaging may not jump out at you from the shelf, it speaks volumes about their commitment to circularity. The novelty of this beauty brand doesn’t lie in the packaging– it lies in the product's ingredients, ethics, and morals, hence their approach to packaging from a simple lens that eliminates superfluous elements.
The Davines Group also reduces its environmental impact by abandoning virgin materials and instead using recycled and renewable energy. Their website states, “From 2014– when 100% of plastic packaging was composed of virgin fossil fuel material– to 2022, 903.3 tons of virgin fossil plastics have been saved through the use of recycled or renewable plastics.”
Lastly, to tackle the sourcing and supply areas of circularity, the company optimizes logistics to avoid unnecessary CO2 emissions and works with B Corp-certified supplier companies who value their positive approach to impactful distribution. Nothing is going to waste on the Davines Group watch.
The collaboration between Davines Group and Plastic Bank and their overall commitment to 100% circularity demonstrates the potential for businesses to be agents of positive change in both environmental and social spheres. Beauty should never come at the Earth’s expense, and these companies at the forefront of the industry will continue to instill that worldwide.

]]>You heard that right. August 2, 2023, marks the day Global Footprint Network announced that “humanity’s demand for ecological resources and services in a given year exceeds what Earth can regenerate in that year.” Imagine you spend your entire month’s salary before the month is up. Over time, this financial behavior becomes unsustainable, leading to economic instability and potential long-term consequences. Simply, Earth’s Overshoot Day represents humanity’s collective “overspending” of Earth’s natural resources and ecological capacity. We are depleting resources and harming ecosystems faster than we can replenish them– if that’s not a wake-up call for some serious solutions, then I don’t know what is.
Earth’s Overshoot Day serves as a stark reminder of the environmental challenges posed by overconsumption and unsustainable resource use, highlighting the need for conservation, sustainability, and efforts to reduce our ecological footprint, making Climate Week NYC a crucial platform to catalyze change.
Found on their website, Climate Week NYC is the “largest annual climate event of its kind, bringing together some 400 events and activities across the City of New York– in person, hybrid and online,” hosted by international nonprofit Climate Group. The event occurs annually in partnership with the United Nations General Assembly, connecting global policymakers, executives, financiers, and advocacy groups before the even more prominent annual COP climate summit each November.
Following closely after New York Fashion Week, where more than 30 designers showcased their latest collections on the runway, how will the fashion industry conversations around environmental and social impact continue towards the Climate Group’s ideal future of “We Can. We Will?”
We’ve gathered the highlights and what to consider for the rest of this Climate Week NYC.
The New York Fashion Act was supported by policymakers, influencers, and industry leaders as they gathered at New York’s Edition Hotel. The New York Fashion Act continues to call out the global greenhouse emissions emitted by the apparel and footwear industries, the continuous production of plastic-based products, and exploited forced child labor.
In response to the greenhouse gas emissions, California passed a bill backed by fashion’s most prominent American trade groups that will require companies that do business in California and have revenue of more than $1 billion to disclose their emissions across all operations.
Additionally, more bills and regulations directly related to fashion are making headway with the EU considering 16 pieces of fashion-focused regulation with similar bills involving workplace factory protection on the table for US state and federal governments.
As discussions around under-represented communities and environmental destruction impact their communities, fashion is held accountable as an industry with most of its largest manufacturing taking place in climate-vulnerable countries.
However, it doesn't go unnoticed that several fashion companies, like Kering and LVMH, are ramping up efforts for nature alongside the young activists who continue to inspire other generations with their unwavering commitment at Climate Week NYC and beyond. New York is leading the way by bridging fashion and sustainability with an impactful approach to two global movements. We stand with you, those in the city fighting for change, and those at home bringing the action to their communities.

]]>Day studied fashion design and journalism for six years in Germany and France, but up until the eye-opening discussion led by Thomas, her knowledge of sustainable fashion consisted of reading the bleak news and walking into classrooms where the professors would ask for those wearing Zara to raise their hands. She had never experienced solution-based sustainability before, so it was only fitting for her to pick up Thomas’ book Fashionopolis: Why What We Wear Matters, inhale it within the next couple of weeks, and move forward with her newfound passion for sharing positive solution-based fashion writing, photography, and collaborations.
From there, Luméra Magazine was created. In a nutshell, Luméra is an online creative platform where a community is harnessed through collaborations with up-and-coming brands, creating unique products within the sustainable fashion space. Living up to its name, a combination of light and period of time, Luméra and its dedicated team are creating a new wave of slow fashion and shining a light on small brands at the forefront of the movement.
When scrolling through the online magazine, it is clear that Luméra upholds a standard and aesthetic that proves sustainability can be editorial and high fashion. “There’s a big misconception in the sustainable fashion industry. People think if you dress sustainable, you look like you came out of a forest and are dressed in beige linen, that’s it,” says Day. Determined to change this narrative, Luméra’s team has a list of requirements for their brands to meet– the most important criteria are a brand's devotion to solution-focused sustainability initiatives and their fashion-forward communities.
Luméra is built on community. As a reader, you witness the impact of the community they have created through their team’s expertise and passions within the industry. As a fashion journalist who previously worked for French women’s magazine Madame Figaro, Day found it crucial to engross herself in fashion as much as possible to write from the most educated and authentic perspective. “I wanted to learn the design side to be able to tell the quality of fabrics, learn about the history, and have a wider understanding of fashion to really become an expert,” she says.
Some of their most clicked stories are their style guides, with the “Vintage Shopping Guide - Paris” being the crème de la crème of all style guides. Day says a New York City vintage guide is on the way, and she hopes it receives the same response the Paris one has. “The image of vintage is no longer something that is old and dusty, but it's something that's exciting and unique,” she says. “I think that's pretty cool that the outlook is changing, and people are becoming more aware of that.”
Day has a prominent history with vintage fashion, from studying in Paris, France– the fashion capital where Parisian women’s timeless approach to style always stands out. “The women have such impeccable style. If you think back 50 years ago to what women in France were wearing and the fashion in the movies, that’s now the items in vintage stores,” she says. “It's cool to be able to wear those beautiful items now with the new mindset on vintage.”
Vintage is always top of mind for Day regarding Fashion Month and dressing for events. She says she appreciates the stories that live behind vintage clothing and that she can uphold her standards of sustainability by spotting quality pieces. “These are the clothes you can pass along to your grandkids,” she says.
She also has experimented with clothing rental after diving into the article her partner Holly Kelsey wrote for Luméra, “Rental Fashion- An Entirely New Ballgame.” Luméra deemed rental a “quiet revolution in the slow fashion movement.” As a firm believer in capsule wardrobes, Day says, “I immediately thought this is the perfect opportunity to find outfits for special occasions like a wedding, Christmas, or New Year’s.” She quickly experienced the epiphanies most rental advocates have: save money and lower your carbon footprint by renting instead of buying. She says she was excited to discover more platforms after Luméra’s first article that are doing rental differently by making it a peer-to-peer model and honing in what Luméra likes to promote: community-driven fashion.
She recalls the Stine Goya show ‘Homecoming’ from Spring/Summer 2024 Copenhagen Fashion Week, which took place on the street of the designer's atelier, where the models shared an experience around a community dinner table in the middle of the street. Day says she has been looking for authenticity and realness amongst the entire fashion community for a while, and Stine Goya’s show was that spark of hope she was looking for since fashion’s clean slate of the pandemic.
She says, “It's cool to see that in that city, for example, they actually took academics as a chance to change things and to move in another direction.” Day’s Fashion Month goal is to focus on the community and for New York, Paris, London, and Milan to learn from their friend from the north, Copenhagen. “I really liked how the brands who didn't meet that criteria, Copenhagen Fashion Week, took the time to educate them,” she says. “They had meetings, online events, and one-on-one coaching to help the brands because those brands want to be sustainable, but it's such a fluffy term, and maybe not everybody knows exactly what they can do.”
Thanks to Copenhagen's devotion to cleaning up Fashion Week with a community-based approach, Fashion Month has pushed sustainability headlines to the forefront alongside the runway and designer talk. As a supporter and observer of Fashion Month, Day says she is ready to see others like her step up and normalize vintage fashion and clothing rental alongside sustainable brands.
Day also recognizes this strong ethical and solution-based commitment amongst the brands featured on Luméra. “The brands we feature have a powerful and engaged community that wants to support them. They have discussions, and they're super authentic,” she says.
Day says that Luméra’s light isn’t dimming anytime soon, as exciting new brand collaborations and features are on the way. The universe Day and her team have created continues to prove that sustainable fashion isn’t about sacrificing style; it’s about redefining it. Let’s continue to educate ourselves, support sustainable brands, and inspire others to do the same.
-As always, elevate your wardrobe with respected fashion and embrace the shift in style.
Photographs taken by Luméra co-founder Andrew DayAlthough returning clothes is tedious, once it’s done, it’s out of your hands, and the clothes will go back on the racks to be sold again. Well, so I thought until headlines popped up across the news the last month, making me question what actually happens to our returns.
The New Yorker reported that the annual retail value of returned goods in the U.S. is approaching a trillion dollars. The returns to online retailers are averaging close to twenty percent, and the clothing returns alone are double that. But the clothing will return to regular inventory and be sold again, right? Wrong. This rarely happens, especially if the seal is broken and the wrap isn’t intact. Instead, the items aren’t returning to the shelf but getting a first-class ticket to the landfill.
With this news, why would anyone stick to the textbook and order more than one item when online shopping increases the chances of return? It's easier said than done because retailers still need to overcome numerous obstacles to combat their return rates. Clothing is a tough industry to combat because all fashion doesn’t stay in style forever.
Jesse Timmermans, CFO of Revolve, a go-to online shop for contemporary and luxury fashion, told investors that their return rate is now 60 percent. Due to this, Revolve released a virtual try-on with a size comparison feature tool and is working to have better communication and detailed product page information.
Companies such as Amazon, Zappos, and Warby Parker are addressing the return issues and offering services that allow for a “try before you buy” feature. Amazon even told CNBC they don’t send any returns to landfills. Even though it might not be Amazon itself, there is no denying that returns end there.
BBC Earth says, “Each year, five billion pounds of waste is generated through returns.” Furthermore, the Canadian television show “Marketplace” includes a conversation with an employee of a “product-destruction” facility where they say a truckload of Amazon returns was apparently shredded for recycling. But what good will shredded-up merchandise do for the circular economy?
At this point, it feels up to the companies to change their policies and websites to accommodate the customers and the environmental needs better. However, there are a few solutions we as consumers can consider to limit our amount of yearly returns. The first solution would be to try to shop in person or choose wisely about what you purchase online. Thankfully, tech and software solutions are popping up to change the online shopping experience to accommodate customers needing more knowledge on sizing and fabrication.
The second solution would be to consider resale. With resale, you know your product's next move through the circular economy and will still earn back your money spent. For your items that aren’t in the condition for resale, our partner, RewearAble, is where you can donate those clothes you might’ve brought to a thrift store, working to keep those garments and textiles out of landfills.
But, like many Tulerettes who choose to explore websites like TheRealReal or Poshmark for their wardrobe, they find that sometimes resale platforms don’t offer a monetary value worth your hassle. This brings us to the last solution– clothing rental. A peer-to-peer lending model allows you to list your items to ensure they gain a second life and enable you to buy less and borrow more.
The next wedding on your calendar is already much easier with a quick rental, allowing you to try a new style and trend without the commitment of buying new but rather a commitment to the planet. Yes, you still have to return your rental item, but this time, back to its owner, a win-win for both fashion enthusiasts and the Earth.

]]>The group ultimately inspired her to start her side hustle, On Duty Citizen (ODC), which helps promote sustainable lifestyle habits and provides a space of inspiration to learn more about the links between sustainability and the climate crises. Through her passion for sustainability and community volunteering, she connected with Tulerie, where we found common ground in establishing a sustainable wardrobe without compromising style. In a time when the news and fashion industry are feeling bleak, I chatted with Bergmeister to discuss her goals as a sustainable activist, her experiences with fashion rental, and why there is still hope for the future of fashion.
Q: How and why did you start your brand, On Duty Citizen?
A: After our first Model Mafia group meetup, I thought it would be cool to have a website where everyone could access sustainable and ethical brands and learn about what made them better than a fast-fashion alternative. I began looking for courses online about sustainability. I found the Factory45 course that helps entrepreneurs learn how to start their fashion brand as sustainably as possible, and from this course, On Duty Citizen was born. Initially, our name was Off Duty Model, On Duty Citizen (ODM/ODC), but from the inspiration of a great friend and mentor, we simplified it to On Duty Citizen so that no matter what industry you were in, you could feel a part of the environmentalist movement.
Q: What are the goals and plans for the website?
A: With anything I do in life, modeling, or my work with ODC, I never want to feel like I’ve “made it.” For instance, during COVID, I returned to school to chip away at my degree and learn more about sustainability. I believe there’s so much beauty in the journey; a lot can be discovered when you continually learn more about your craft.
That said, I’d love to continue learning more about environmentalism and sustainability and be more consistent with updating the website regularly. When I feel informed, I feel more motivated to spread awareness about the harms of climate change and share bits of optimism and joy. Modeling is my primary source of income, so it is easy to put ODC on the back burner, but I learn so much when I study more about the links between the fashion industry and our climate crises, which helps me be in a position to potentially change the industry from within. These two sides of Britt, the model and the sustainable activist are incredibly complementary to each other.
Q: What about Tulerie’s mission aligns with your sustainable practices?
A: Tulerie closes the loop on waste and gives life to products that may otherwise end up in landfills. I think renting is an incredibly innovative way to “shop” your community member’s closets, revolutionizing the entire fashion industry. Many people will buy a dress for an event and feel like they can never wear it again. While I try and shift that narrative by continually posting about how “sexy” it is to re-wear your clothes, I also think renting provides a solution to this dilemma. You can profit off your items by renting items out as well as rotating cool pieces into your rotation.
Q: What was your first experience like using our platform?
A: I was nervous! It was my first time renting, and I was going to the GQ party in LA and wanted to look sexy yet sophisticated. There were so many amazing options, and the whole process was incredibly seamless. I can understand the hesitancy with renting out special pieces, but with time, renting all our clothes will begin to feel incredibly normalized. There’s a lot of joy in knowing my pieces create new memories and stories with others in my community rather than potentially sitting in my closet for months untouched.
Q: What are some tips on how to have high fashion, style, and sustainability coexist in your daily life?
A: I love investing in sustainable basics and making my style unique by renting fun pieces for events and shopping secondhand. My style revolves around sustainable/ethical white and black tees, good denim, fun vintage jackets, and accessories. Timelessness is key, and I try and stay away from trends that will go out of style. If I like something trendy, I’ll wait a few months to a year to see if I still love it and then try to find a secondhand option instead of purchasing something new.
Q: As a model whose presence is important on social media, how have you seen social media play a part in the negative or positive impact of sustainability awareness?
A: Social media is a blessing and a curse in that you can use it as a medium to inspire those around you to adopt better habits and be conscious of their footprint. However, the pressure to stay relevant and post in new outfits all the time, as well as traveling all over the world and posting your best moments, can feel overwhelming. I try and find balance. When you follow @brittbergmeister, I want you to feel like you’re seeing all sides of Britt.
Q: How have you seen or experienced sustainability and mental health impact each other?
A: Sometimes, in the climate world, forgetting your reusable coffee mug can send you into a spiral of anxiety. On the other hand, sometimes your actions of bringing that mug can feel so small that it doesn’t feel worth the effort. Climate anxiety is a real feeling that can leave you feeling paralyzed in fear. My friend Anne Therese Gennari, a climate optimist, hosts talks on optimism within the climate space and shares the importance of taking small individual steps that will hopefully lead to a huge wave of action. While we have to hold big corporations and government officials with a lot of power accountable by protesting or voting, there is also a lot to be hopeful for. If you find yourself in a wave of anxiety, take a breath and have a moment of pause. We can’t be perfect 100% of the time, which is okay.
Q: How does sustainability affect your lifestyle and work as a model?
A: Although I wish I could work solely for sustainable brands, I hope that by working with less sustainable brands, I can inspire them to change. I don’t believe in shaming others into action, but I think a conversation on set about how passionate I am about sustainability can go a long way. Modeling also gives me a platform with thousands of individuals, and I use this privilege to share things in the sustainable space that mean a lot to me. The sustainable journey is never-ending, and I always try and be transparent about what I’m continuing to learn, when I’ve been wrong, and how we can all improve.
Q: What do you hope the future of fashion looks like?
A: I think digital fashion is an incredibly exciting innovation in the very near future, and I hope we can rely on clean energy in this space before it’s too big an industry to adapt. I’m a big proponent of prevention versus reaction and think that with any new trend or innovation, we should look at how we can execute in the most sustainable, economical, and inclusive way.
Q: What is one thing you would say to those just starting their sustainability journey?
A: Find something in your lane that excites you and become an expert in that field. There is room for everyone in this movement, and every action counts in positively contributing to the climate change movement.

]]>Enter Celsious, a New York City premium laundromat and online destination for sustainable garment care solutions that is here to solve all your concerns with their best-in-the-business wash-dry-fold method and modern sustainable laundry products. Celsious may be the most fashionable laundromat we have ever seen. Instead of old linoleum floors, flickering fluorescent lights, a seating area with wobbly mismatched chairs, and a well-worn bulletin board on display, co-founders and sister power duo Theresa and Corinna Williams have created a laundromat you might actually want to spend a Saturday afternoon in.
The professional and friendly space that first opened its doors in 2017 is immaculately decorated and boasts top-notched Electrolux washers and dryers, an outdoor patio, and an upstairs equipped with organic kombucha on tap, baked goods, and matcha drinks. Celsious is everything the Williams sisters desired, a modern space where green practices and fresh laundry go hand in hand, leaving you stress-free.
The Williams sisters have a background and expertise in fashion and design and a shared love for the environment. For an industry that lacked some TLC toward the environment and its customers, they saw an opportunity in New York City to set up shop one block from the Bedford stop on the L train to serve Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and beyond a new sustainable laundromat experience.
Just when you thought your laundry couldn't get any dirtier, according to National Geographic, washing machines emit an estimated 62 million tons of CO2-eq greenhouse gasses yearly and use around 19 billion cubic meters of water annually.
One of the hallmarks of Celsious is their cutting-edge energy-efficient washers and dryers that save between 30 and 40 percent of water and gas with numerous specialty settings to avoid dry cleaning and toxic chemicals. In addition to their machines, Celsious has 100 percent biodegradable laundry powder and offer natural solutions for stains, pilling, static, and scent. Not using harsh chemicals commonly found in detergents demonstrate Celsious’s commitment to health-conscious laundering practices and ensures the clothes worn next to the skin are free from harmful residues. Celsious even collects dryer lint that can be made into insulation– a novel upcycling story.
This sustainable technology starts at their flagship laundromat, offering in-store drop-off services, including a wash-dry-fold, wash-dry-bag, and specialty items service. Their turnaround times are as quick as four hours, and you can get an in-person laundry consultation at the store. For those not living locally, they have expanded their services to include laundry pickup and delivery and an online shop where you can find their curated selection of sustainable laundry products and garment care for your own home. The products include Corewash Laundry Powder, Stain Removal Spray, Microfiber Laundry Bag, and more.
This dedication to sustainable technology not only benefits the environment but also serves as an educational platform, inspiring customers to consider the environmental consequences of their choices. However, the allure of Celsious doesn't solely rest on its commitment to sustainability; it's equally about the experience they provide and the community they have built. The ambiance of the laundromat is meticulously curated to transform the act of doing laundry into a social and enriching endeavor where even financially struggling customers feel welcomed thanks to their pay-it-forward program Bustle highlighted as the “laundry paid for by other members of the community.”
For the peer-to-peer lending community, this is one solution to furthering your conscious commitment to sustainability. That step as a Tulerie lender to clean your item isn’t going away, just as our weekly to-do laundry lists will always need a check mark. Taking advantage of Celsious's luxuries at home or in-store is one step closer to receiving a clean slate with even cleaner clothes.

]]>FARM Rio’s kaleidoscope of patterns, bold colors, and playful prints have found their way into the Tulerie closet, where our fashion-forward community is experiencing firsthand the tropical flair rooted in inclusion and sustainability.
It’s not hard to spot the efforts of FARM Rio when their clothing tags state, “We Plant 1,000 Trees Every Day.” However, clothing tags are often the first introduction to greenwashing from a fashion brand. As consumers, it's part of our responsibility to research to distinguish sustainable brands from those greenwashing. Where does FARM Rio fall on the line of sustainability?
FARM Rio’s sustainability page is stacked with its commitment to eco-friendly practices and striving to reduce its environmental impact. The One Purchase, One Tree Planted project is the first standout in its responsibility. “Nature has been our greatest inspiration here at FARM Rio for the past 25 years,” FARM Rio’s website states. “We believe it is part of our duty to help protect nature and give back to the environment.”
FARM Rio has partnered with One Tree Planted to aid in reforestation efforts in all Brazilian biomes. The initiative is exactly like how it sounds. After every purchase on the FARM Rio website, stores, or authorized retailers, the brand will donate the dollar amount equivalent to one tree planted–and at the end of 2022, they reached their milestone of 1,000,000 trees.
Furthermore, FARM Rio is a part of the United Nations Global Impact, where they have established a carbon agenda aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals and the 2030 agenda. FARM Rio is a 100% carbon-neutral company that continues to offset its clothing operations' total emissions in Brazil and globally. Their latest 2021 sustainability report has been published and outlines more of their goals and initiatives. We recommend scrolling through it to learn more about FARM Rio’s ESG.
A great way to get immediate insight into FARM Rio’s commitment to environmental, social, and economic sustainability is its brand pillars. The pillars of FARM Rio include circularity, culture, nature, people, and responsible materials. Their roots as a Brazilian company inspired by nature and the circular economy concept are infectious to the fashion community. “I feel proud and deeply emotional to be able, through fashion, to represent Brazil—our beautiful country and has a very diverse culture—and our city of Rio de Janeiro, where FARM Rio was born,” says founder Barros.
We will not deny that FARM Rio has growing to do with the sustainability movement. They could be better. However, they are worth discussing because they recognize that sustainability is a journey, not a destination. These are the brands we should be highlighting and uplifting within the community. These are the brands worth our time and investment.
FARM Rio has emerged as a trailblazer in the industry, proving to their community that sustainability is more than just a buzzword to them. They have built a loyal customer base while inspiring other brands to follow suit. Through FARM Rio, fashion and sustainability can coexist harmoniously.

]]>Paying homage to the world’s most famous doll, Robbie dove into the archives and recreated iconic outfits Barbie wore throughout different eras. It’s not unusual for a cast to pay tribute to their character through red carpet fashion. Although we fully expected pink perfection, we were pleasantly surprised to see the commitment between Robbie and Mukamal to deliver looks where sustainability and style are perfectly aligned.
Barbie has left an indelible mark on popular culture, and her fashion influence has especially inspired the real world. Rooted in using fashion as expression, Barbie has been a longtime muse for high-end designers, street style trends, and in recent years, inclusive representation. Recognizing the power of Barbie and what she represents to society, Robbie and Mukamal used their platforms to make a sustainable statement amongst all ages of Barbie fans.
In a fashion culture where the pressure of overconsumption is at an all-time high, archival fashion stands apart from fleeting trends and exemplifies timeless style and cultural significance. Without neglecting the long way fashion houses need to go to normalize transparency, we want to recognize their archival past that inspires rewearing, high-quality materials, timeless designs, and reduced production.
The first standout archival outfit on the list for time-tested beauty is Robbie’s vintage Moschino 1964 Sparkling Pink Barbie look. She wore a Moschino skirt suit from the brand’s spring/summer 2015 collection inspired by the doll's sparkling pink sheath dress, matching jacket, and pillbox hat. What does this archival look mean for fashion sustainability? Nothing new was created therefore reducing production and the overall negative environmental impact.
Next on the list is none other than vintage Versace. The 1994 autumn/winter collection stepped out from the archives for the day and perfectly captured the Barbie spirit. The look included a metallic pink pleated skirt, high neck knit, purple socks, and white heels, all from the 1994 collection worn previously by model Christy Turlington and Kate Moss. The look is rewearing at its finest. The outfit had a moment with three influential celebrities while seamlessly compelling a different story, each bringing a sense of freshness and newness.
No one does archival fashion quite like Chanel, and Robbie pulled off the chicest airport fit in a Chanel checked pink blazer that has been seen on Claudia Schiffer for the spring/summer 1996 catwalk. “There were some incredible outfits that I actually got to wear that Claudia Schiffer herself, who’s kind of like a real-life Barbie, wore,” said Robbie in a video. This look represents timeless designs that transcend seasonal trends. What looked good in 1996 can still hold relevance today due to enduring styles consumers are investing in and are less likely to discard.
Her final archival look to embark on the Barbie journey was a Valentino spring/summer 1993 flirty polka dot outfit to embody the 2015 Pink and Fabulous Barbie. The craftsmanship of luxury fashion is unmatched, and its ability to uphold its condition through decades of its lifespan continues to make an impression.
Barbie will undoubtedly continue to be a cultural phenomenon, and hopefully, her legacy will see further developments in the space of conscious fashion thanks to Robbie’s archival revival.
For those admiring the red carpet fashion from afar, there are ways for you to be conscious participants in the movement. Slow Fashion Movement has a breakdown of the contributions high-end fashion consumers, non-designer fashion enthusiasts, and designers can make for a more sustainable future.

]]>According to The LYCRA Company, “The fashion industry and its supply chain are responsible for ten percent of worldwide greenhouse gas emissions every year– representing a significant call to action for manufacturers and brands to find solutions for better practices.”
LYCRA has been a global leader in developing innovative and sustainable fiber and technology solutions, particularly within the apparel and textile industries. Their portfolio includes fibers like their renowned LYRCA® fiber, COOLMAX® fiber, and THERMOLITE® fiber, among others.
By collaborating with Qore®, a joint venture between Cargill, a leader in agricultural and fermentation technologies, and HELM, a leading marketer and distributor of chemicals, they are taking that portfolio one step further to produce the fabric of the future.
Qore® has created QIRA®, the key solution to developing the next generation of commercialized bio-derived materials, and the hero of this innovation is none other than farm-grown corn. QIRA® is derived from an annually renewable field of dent corn that isn’t for direct human consumption. Through the collaboration, QIRA® will be developed into renewable LYCRA® fiber that can be used in applications from denim to swimwear, diapers, and intimates.
“Agriculture is the backbone of QIRA® and is how we can offer a more sustainable alternative to traditional BDO that is derived from finite resources,” said Jon Veldhouse, chief executive officer of Qore®. “The facility to produce QIRA® is being built in central Iowa and will benefit from working closely with our raw material supplier Cargill who promotes continuous improvement in the sustainability of field corn production including more regenerative farming practices.”
The two companies share a vision of delivering sustainable solutions. “Their expertise in operating fermentation processes and understanding of the chemical value chains makes them the ideal partner to help develop a bio-derived LYCRA® fiber at commercial scale,” says Julien Born, chief executive officer of The LYCRA Company.
Similar to their other fibers' core mission, the renewable LYCRA® fiber with QIRA® will enhance the clothing's comfort, fit, shape, and durability, proving that achieving quality while prioritizing sustainability is possible. WWD highlights, "When compared to spandex made with traditional raw materials, LYCRA® fiber made with QIRA® has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 44 percent.”
Why should LYCRA be on your radar? Not only is it reducing worldwide greenhouse gas emissions and the dependency on fossil fuels, the company holds significant potential for the future of fashion cultivated from the Earth. Their research, partnerships, education, and awareness have positioned them to drive positive change.
As active consumers, we must stay on top of news within the production and supply chains and be willing to choose natural fibers like LYCRA® when purchasing. We can look forward to the production of QIRA® starting at the end of 2024 in Eddyville, Iowa, and the LYCRA® fiber made with QIRA® following shortly after that in 2025.

]]>On June 27 and 28, 2023, fashion industry leaders, designers, and sustainability experts gathered in Copenhagen for the Global Fashion Summit. The Summit debuted in 2009 and has since become an annual discussion on the most critical environmental, social, and ethical issues facing the industry, people, and our planet.
The two-day event is presented by Global Fashion Agenda (GFA) – a non-profit organization that fosters industry collaboration on sustainability in fashion to drive impact. The Summit was GFA’s solution to bringing leadership from around the world together, where they become inspired to drive change within the sustainable movement.
As for the theme? This year's focus was “Ambition to Action.” Keeping a positive tone and “uplifting sense of clarity,” the theme focuses on tangible impact. Despite the sustainable developments we have seen in recent years, issues of “greenwashing” and “diversity washing” are at an all-time high. Producer and author Samata Pattinson perfectly summed it up: "I love our industry, but we often mark our homework and give ourselves A’s.”
Some notable guest speakers included Antoine Arnault, image and environment at LVMH Group, Shakaila Forbes-Bell, founder of Fashion is Psychology, and Jonathan Anderson, founder of JW Anderson and creative director of Loewe. For two days, they were openly transparent with each other as industry leaders in addressing overproduction, decarbonizing the supply chain, using sustainable material at scale, and implementing sustainable policy.
We walked away from the Summit with a list of key takeaways regarding sustainable fashion today, and we recommend reading Nylon and Vogue’s roundup list. But as a company supporting a circular model within the luxury industry, here’s what stuck out to us about the future of luxury and circular fashion.
FASHION SHOWS AREN’T GOING TO STOP
Arnault began by saying that “luxury products are sustainable by nature” due to their durability and repairability. Anderson went on to say that sustainability is always top of mind among young designers. He said that during the hiring processes at Loewe, the young fashion school graduates ask him about the company's sustainable credentials, which is an ethical priority for them as professionals. Also, as an LVMH Prize jury member, he said that 90 percent of the collections he sees have a sustainable angle.
We have addressed the controversy about the numerous fashion shows and collections outside the ready-to-wear category, and the industry leaders' conclusions are just as expected. Anderson said the fashion show is “there for the dream,” which is critical to the industry. “They haven’t slowed down. What’s very important is that we do them differently,” said Arnault. “We used to export an entire show and do another one in L.A., Seoul, and Hawaii. Now we use local communities, local productions, and local castings.”
INNOVATION NEEDS TO BE ACCESSIBLE FOR GREATER IMPACT
But what does this wave of innovative fashion mean for smaller and independent designers? Hillary Taymour, the designer for Collina Strada, one of the best sustainable brands in the game, weighed in on how it affects her label. “All this innovation that’s so amazing is not available for brands like us to purchase right now,” she said. “We need to work together as a fashion industry instead of each man for themself.” As an influential designer, she encourages brands to return to the basics, use locally sourced materials, and keep everything in-house.
WE NEED TO BUY LESS
The most important takeaway from the Summit that Tulerie continues to preach to our community is that less is always more. “Why are we not addressing the issue that we have so much here?” says Nicole Mclaughlin, a designer who worked with Heiko Desens, global creative director of PUMA, in the GFA Designer Challenge 2023. “I want to see companies taking responsibility for all the clothes they’ve made in the past.” She suggests finding a solution to the lifespan of the products by emphasizing localization, repair shops, and slower production.
Despite the great conversations in Copenhagen, there is still more to discuss. Global Fashion Agenda will host another International Summit in Boston on September 27, where they will continue the theme of “Ambition to Action.” Home to renowned fashion brands and leading retailers, it is exciting to see North America hosting the following forum where the sustainable transformations of the industry can reach a broader and more diverse audience.

]]>Prada Group and UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) have promoted Sea Beyond since 2019, and this July, they are officially expanding their partnership beyond education and into ocean-related research and humanitarian projects.
Lorenzo Bertelli, Prada’s head of corporate social responsibility, announced the new financial commitment at the UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission’s Member States Assembly in Paris, France. As an educational program that aligns with the Prada Group’s goals–raising awareness on ocean conservation and sustainability to students all over the world–strengthening this partnership into further research, projects, and an Ocean Decade Coordination Office in Venice with the help of the Re-Nylon collection was the necessary step to drive more change.
Since the start of Sea Beyond, more than 600 secondary school students in eight different countries have completed their educational program, and 120 preschoolers have completed their Kindergarten of the Lagoon lessons.
Sea Beyond is ready to expand with the help of Prada Group and its Re-Nylon collection sales to reach 10,000 students in ocean literacy before 2025 and, most importantly, encourage governments to bring this education into schools directly.
Prada’s Re-Nylon collection shows what Prada does best, seamlessly delivering high-end contemporary fashion while committing to sustainability. The creations in the collection are crafted from entirely regenerated nylon made through recycled plastic found in oceans, landfills, fishing nets, and textile fiber waste globally. “Our commitment to Prada Re-Nylon highlights our continued efforts towards promoting responsible business,” says Bertelli. “This collection allows us to contribute and create products without using new resources.”
Does the Re-Nylon Re-Edition 2000 mini bag or the Re-Nylon puffy headband with the instantly recognizable logo ring a bell? Not only are these highly sought rentals in the Tulerie closet, but they are coveted items across all closets worldwide. Now that the proceeds from this collection will boost ocean protection, the purchase justification just got a lot easier.
What’s next for the partnership of Sea Beyond, Prada Group, and IOC? Ahead of the next UN Ocean Conference in 2025, the Prada group and IOC will stage a preparatory forum in Venice in 2024 and continue to be active in educational programs. Furthermore, their research and projects include funding the final phase of a project led by Italian biologist Giovanni Chimienti, who studies deep-sea marine organisms and partnering with French charity Bibliothèques Sans Frontières (Libraries without borders), creating ocean-focused content for the benefit of underprivileged children.
Prada recognizes that working with the younger generations is the best way to get the resources and knowledge to the general population. “Culture and education are fundamental for making change happen,” says Bertelli. “We need to invest in a constructive dialogue with young generations to contribute to a more sustainable future and preserve our ocean.”
